We always hear the stories of success and derive enough inspiration to proceed further. But, ever heard a story of a failure who successfully fought against the odds? The UPSC council conducts the examination every year hoping to enroll the best and the excellent minds. Not the best and surely not the excellent, IPS Mithun Kumar retaliated against the ordinary dilemma and proved everybody wrong. How?
Well, the dreams serve as the igniting fuel in everybody’s mind to achieve something. This was the case of Mithun Kumar.
His life before the Indian Police Services:
A total backbencher during his schooldays, this young spirited soul was a total failure.
He was one of those students who were never looked upon with the thought that they would achieve something in life. As he says, “In my childhood days, I was a mediocre student, the typical backbencher, the one on whom the brighter classmates and teachers would look down upon”.
Not much is known about his life. However, it becomes clear that he was the eldest in the family and had the responsibility to support his family. Whenever he saw the police officers passing by, there was something that triggered him to be in the same position one day.
IPS Mithun Kumar says that it was his father’s dream that sowed the seeds of inspiration deep within him. As time took its toll, the years passed by and he started working as a Software engineer to support his family.
Due to dissatisfaction at the workplace, soon this IPS officer left his private service. His brother’s employment in a reputed firm encouraged him to take this decision.
His IPS journey:
Earlier Mithun worked as a software engineer for 3 years after that felt that there was something missing in his life. He recalled his old days and remembered how he used to admire police officers.
He knew that in case of emergencies, the people always ran either towards the healthcare workers or police officers. This developed a huge budding seed inside him and soon he started preparing for the UPSC examinations.
He wrote the exam 4 times year after year and could not crack it. For an ordinary life, the journey could have ended then and there itself. However, for Mithun, it was a complete cycle of new learnings and a concrete foundation.
In the year 2016, this aspirant of civil services cracked the UPSC examination and received the rank of AIR-130.
With this rank, he could have easily applied for the IAS services. However, it was the police uniform that always fascinated him and he decided to apply for IPS services.
IPS Mithun Kumar’s Advice:
In his words, “I wanted to be a civil servant and a police officer in particular. Whenever I saw a policeman on the road there would be a spark in me. When I cleared the exams, many asked me why not the Administrative service. I had no answers, I could not explain to them how much the Uniform fascinated me and that I had always imagined myself to be in one”.
In order to inspire the aspirants who believe they are not good enough. Always remember the quote by the former President APJ Abdul Kalam “Fine minds lie on the last bench of the classroom”.
Currently, IPS Mithun Kumar is serving in the state of Karnataka.
