The Union Public Services Commission receives thousands of applications every year from candidates who aspire to serve the country to the best of their abilities. This article narrates the story of one such girl who believed in shackling the boundaries and never stopped.
At some point in life, everyone gets mocked by failure but not everyone is brave enough to tackle it. Rukmani Riar – IAS topper, who not only owned up to her debacle but also worked so hard that her one-time failure is now seen with an eye of awe and inspiration.
Journey of IAS Rukmani Riar
Rukmani, who is currently serving as an IAS officer in the state of Rajasthan comes from Chandigarh, Punjab. IAS Rukmani Riar is the daughter of a retired Deputy District Attorney of Hoshiarpur, Baljinder Singh Riar and a homemaker, Takdeer Kaur. The officer once failed in school when she was only in standard VI. She was a student at Chandigarh’s New Public School. And later moved to Sacred Heart School in Dalhousie. It is undebatable to say that it was a life-changing experience for her.
She later completed her graduation in BSc (honors) from Guru Nanak Dev University in Amritsar. Rukmani was a remarkable student. Moreover, Rukmani was awarded with a gold medal for securing first position in all three years at the university.
IAS Rukmani Riar was also a part of the Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai where she studied social entrepreneurship.
She worked with the Planning Commission of India as a part of her internship. Also, she worked for NGOs such as Ashodaya in Mysore and Annapurna Mahila Mandal in Mumbai.
Life of After UPSC
When she secured the second position in her first attempt in the Civil Services Exam in 2011. She stepped closer in fulfilling her dream, which is to help the people. Moreover, she has published various papers on concerning topics- ‘Struggle with Reality: women and their working conditions.’ And ‘Skewed Sex Ratio in India: a cause of immediate concern.’
While working under Harsh Mander at the center of Equity Studies in New Delhi. She undertook the situation of urban slums to be degrading and took several measures to facilitate positive changes in areas like Jama Masjid and Yamuna Pushtha.
The success story of this UPSC Topper has inspired the masses in believing that with sheer hard work and zeal, anything is achievable in life. Her success ladder has immensely motivated many IAS aspirants who will be appearing for the Indian Administrative Services in the years to come. Rukmani Riar does not believe in the modern practice of attending coaching classes for studies. Instead, she reiterates the traditional approach to study smarter and work harder. This is clearly stated by the ideology she follows of not complaining and sulking. And thereby, strive harder to achieve the best.
